Founded in May 2016 by current President Belle Le Fevre, the University of York Croquet Society was created as a way of relaxing and socialising in the summer term when exam and deadline stress gets underway. For all the sports and societies created at The University of York there was no croquet and being such a beloved sport during the summer month up and down the UK, it seemed only fitting that it should exist at The University of York. Croquet is commonly associated with older generations so it is our mission to encourage students to take up the sport.

Where we play

Heslington West Campus

All of our sessions take place on the croquet lawn outside Heslington Hall. It is near Derwent and next to the quiet place. It is a very scenic beautiful location; one of the best locations in the whole of The University of York! Excellent opportunity for a new profile picture!

Teams/Abilities

We make a point of making this a no pressure sports club. No previous experience or level of ability needed. Majority of members are beginners. We encourage friends to play together as well as mixing groups up to give everyone the opportunity to meet new people. Croquet is above anything a social sport, so we really encourage this aspect of the sport. If anyone would like to join a sports club for the social element and is worried about ability, or the physical element of any sport, this is the club for you!

Equipment

We provide all the croquet equipment so there is no equipment necessary. There is no need to purchase any of our merchandise or any other kit as everyone plays in their own clothes. The only requirement is that only flat soled shoes can be worn. No heels or spikes as it damages the croquet lawn. We do have some merchandise however this is non compulsory.

Additional information

Membership

In order to play you must be a member. As a sports club you must either have or purchase Gold Tier AU fee. All memberships are processed through the YUSU website. Our membership is £5 for the whole year and you may come to as many socials and sessions as you chose. We made CroqSoc as cheap as possible with no equipment or kit requirements to make it as affordable as possible for students and it has also meant that croquet works well alongside any other sports or societies.
